Leslie Gargan has been a working copywriter and filmwriter since his first stint, fresh out of college, with J. Walter Thompson/N.Y., in the late 1970’s. Further seasoning as a writer took place at Wells, Rich, Greene/N.Y., Starr, Seigle, McCombs and the Schiller Group, Honolulu.
Leslie took a break from advertising writing in the 1980’s, and worked as a writer in the film business for Haley/Lyon Productions and Charles Fries Entertainment. He wrote the pilot that sold the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not series, starring Jack Palance, to ABC-T.V., and worked as a staff writer on the show for two years.
At various travel companies he developed his love of travel writing, bringing an unusually romantic flair (the "sizzle") to the retail ‘sell’ that is the bread and butter of the travel business.
“Credits” include writing on the following accounts: Eastman Kodak, Ford, Rice-A-Roni, Bank of Hawaii, Castle & Cooke Homes, Hilton Hotels, Hawaii, Princeville Resort, Sprint/U.S. Army, and the Island of Lanai.
Leslie prefers to work freelance, out of his home. He turns the work around fast, charges a flat fee only (hourly billing is unrealistic, he feels, as there are inevitable rewrites), and is equally versed in print, radio, TV, and collateral. "If you can't have fun doing it, why do it?" is the mantra of this man who thoroughly enjoys his work, and loves communicating the joy to others. |
